I enjoyed “Shall We Dance?” This movie came out October 15, 2004, I was apprehensive of going because I had such fond memories of the original Japanese film of the same name from 1997, written and directed by Masayuki Suo. A Rodgers and Hammerstein song from the “The King and I,” lends these films there title. There is a movie with a different plot called “Shall We Dance” from 1937, a Gershwin Musical with dancing by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Watching a remake of a movie to me is a strange exercise in déjà vu and usually there is, in my opinion no point to it. Why can’t the American film industry come up with new original works? That said, this new version directed by Peter Chelsom and screenplay based on Masayuki Suo 1997 version by Audrey Wells, is a poor copy.

Shall We Dance? takes place in Chicago, filmed in Winnipeg because of the SARS scare in Toronto. This film is about finding the missing passion in life that we all crave. An over worked Estate Lawyer, John Clark (Richard Gere) is inspired by his sightings of a beautiful dance instructor, Paulina (Jennifer Lopez) to sign up and secretively start taking ballroom dancing lessons. John Clark’s wife Beverly (Susan Sarandon) senses something is up with her Husband, hires a investigative agency and well if you need more plot, it is time to go see the movie.

Shall We Dance? is a guilty pleasure movie. My favourite aspect of this remake was the work of John De Borman, the Director of Photography. John De Borman created a dreamy jewel like atmosphere, I really enjoyed visiting what he has created on film. I would recommend “Shall We Dance?”, but really in all fairness one should really see Masayuki Suo 1997 version first.
